Thanksgiving is a great time of year to reflect on what we have to be thankful for. It is a day that has been set aside to give thanks for our many blessings. The long weekend is usually filled with turkey dinner, football, family and friends. Thanksgiving can also be a humbling holiday. It is a time when many people decide to give back whether donating money to charity or time to a soup kitchen. The South Coast Team would like to point out a specific charity that uses this time of year to focus on kids who normally wouldn’t get a Thanksgiving dinner, Share Our Strength – No Kid Hungry. Unfortunately, there are some very sobering statistics out there when it comes to child hunger here in the US:
- 1 in 5 children in America –more than 16 million– struggle with hunger.
- 15.7 million children in America live in poverty.
- Less than half of eligible children get free or reduced-price school breakfast.
These kids have trouble learning, tend to get sick more often and don’t develop as fast or as soundly as other kids. Yet, Share Our Strength sees a future in which no child in America goes hungry. Share Our Strength began ending childhood hunger in 1984. Their No Kid Hungry Campaign launched in 2010 aims to end childhood hunger in the US by 2015. They work together through partnerships with public officials, community and faith-based organizations, and private-sector leaders at the state and city level, to connect kids to the programs that can help them and the food they need. To date over 105,000 people have taken the No Kid Hungy pledge, and we encourage you to join us and take the pledge this year.
Every $1 you donate to Share Our Strength helps connect a child with up to 10 meals. And to sweeten the deal, your tax-deductible gift will be matched, dollar for dollar, now through December 31 thanks to the generosity of the No Kid Hungry Holiday Match Partners. There are kids out there who really need our help, and every one of us has an opportunity to do something about it.
